Objective Figurative language is a fundamental component of linguistic–cognitive abilities that plays a critical role in the comprehension of indirect meanings, abstract thinking, and everyday communicative interactions. It pertains to an individual’s capacity to interpret implied meanings and is inherently context-dependent. The comprehension of figurative language requires advanced linguistic and cognitive skills. In Persian, no comprehensive tool currently exists that can systematically assess various types of figurative language. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop the Persian receptive figurative language test (P-RFLT) and evaluate its psychometric properties in healthy Persian-speaking adults.
Materials & Methods This is a methodological study with a cross-sectional design conducted during 2023-2024. Test items were developed based on theoretical frameworks of figurative language drawn from cognitive linguistics and pragmatics, encompassing four components: metaphors, idioms, proverbs, and similes. A panel of linguistics experts evaluated face and content validity. Following item development and a pilot study, the final version of the test was administered to 337 healthy Persian-speaking adults aged 25-65 years. Construct validity was assessed by exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach’s α coefficient, and test re-test reliability using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC).
Results The items for all four components of the P-RFLT demonstrated adequate face and content validity. Construct validity was confirmed by EFA, with the Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) measure and factor loadings indicating that each component was independently measured and capable of discriminating among participants. Cronbach’s α coefficients ranged from 0.75 to 0.80, and the ICC ranged from 0.71 to 0.81, demonstrating acceptable reliability of the instrument.
Conclusion The P-RFLT has satisfactory validity and reliability and can be used as a reliable tool in clinical assessments, cognitive rehabilitation, and language-and-cognition research.
