Objective: Anxiety and depressive disorders are common during adolescence and are associated with significant functional impairments. Functional impairment refers to specific limitations in various functional domains of daily life caused by a disorder and is a critical topic in adolescent mental health. Currently, there are few tools available to assess functional impairments resulting from these disorders among adolescents, and very few have been validated across different cultures. This study aimed to translate and validate the Persian version of the "Adolescent Life Interference Scale for Internalizing Disorders" (ALIS-I) among Iranian adolescents.
Methods: This descriptive and psychometric study involved 384 adolescents (57.8% girls, mean age: 15.54 ± 1.62 years) in 2022. Participants were selected using convenience sampling. The non-clinical sample included 170 (52.8%) girls and 152 (47.2%) boys, while the clinical sample comprised 52 (83.9%) girls and 10 (16.1%) boys. Factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients were used to assess validity and reliability.
Results: Confirmatory factor analysis supported the four-factor solution identified in the original study for ALIS. The subscales of ALIS-I are: "Withdrawal/Avoidance," "Somatic Symptoms," "Academic/Work Problems," and "Peer Problems." Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the total scale and subscales ranged from 0.70 to 0.89, and McDonald's omega coefficients for the total scale and subscales were above 0.70. Test-retest reliability, measured using intraclass correlation coefficients over three weeks, ranged from 0.80 to 0.92 for the total scale and subscales. Convergent and divergent validity of ALIS-I were also acceptable.
Conclusion: The Persian version of ALIS-I appears suitable for assessing functional impairments due to internalizing disorders (anxiety and depressive disorders) in Iranian adolescents and can be used by clinicians to evaluate treatment outcomes. It can also be utilized in research related to adolescents.
