Introduction: Due to the increase in the elderly population and the increase in the prevalence of falls and loss of balance in the elderly، the use of medical insoles and shoes is one of the common and low-cost methods to improve balance in these people. The purpose of this study is to use a combined approach of shoes and soles، which includes shoes with lateral heel flares along with soles with arch support and grip bar on static and dynamic balance parameters of elderly people with balance problems.
Methods and Materials: This is a quasi-experimental before-and-after study that was conducted on 15 eligible seniors with a history of falling in the past 6 months (mean age، 70 ± 3.94 years). In this study، semi-rigid EVA sole was used. Walking and standing stability tests were performed on the subjects in two conditions: one standard shoe with no change and the other shoe with lateral heel flare and insole with arch support and grip bar. The gait analysis system was used to record the temporal and spatial parameters of walking and to measure balance.
Results: Compared to standard shoe and shoe with a lateral heel flare and arch support and grip bar increased the walking speed (P=0.003) and cadence (P=0.004) and the stride time (P=0.008) decreased significantly. The finding of the movement of the center of pressure in the M-L direction in the standing position when using modified shoes increased significantly (P=0.001). The progressive force of the movement increased and the opposing force of the movement decreased.
Conclusion: Using shoes with flared heels and insoles with arch support and grip bar will increase balance. It also improved the parameters of step time and walking speed to facilitate movements in elderly people.
